Shenzhen travel guide
Choose a base before building a long Shenzhen itinerary. Futian works for the city-history museum, while Nanshan and Shekou suit a stay around western neighborhoods and the waterfront. The distances add up if you cross the city for every stop. In two or three days, you can visit a museum, try Cantonese and Hakka dishes, and spend an afternoon by the water.
Suggested stay Allow two or three full days, with a third for Hakka heritage or shopping. Plan a Hong Kong crossing separately.
Before you arrive
- Choose your hotel district from your planned activities; a low room price across the city can add long journeys.
- Save Baoan Airport as SZX and confirm your terminal. Shenzhen North railway station is a different hub.
- Check the Shenzhen Museum venue. City history, ancient art and reform exhibits are in different buildings.
Check your passport and itinerary in the entry checker before booking. Its coverage and unresolved rules matter: an airport route in this guide does not establish permission to enter China.
01 / Land and get settled
From the airport to your hotel
Baoan Airport (SZX) connects to the city on Metro Line 11. For a hotel in Futian or western Shenzhen, start by checking the metro route and the final walk from the station. The airport has T3 and a satellite concourse; follow the signs for ground transport after collecting your bags.
Before leaving the terminal
Use the arrival guide to separate immigration, baggage collection and customs. Follow the current official instructions for your documents and anything you need to declare.
Open your saved hotel address and check that your connection works. If you need a SIM, ask the airport information desk for an operator counter and confirm its hours and total price before paying. A travel data eSIM does not automatically give you a Chinese phone number. For cash, look for an ATM displaying your card network and review its fee screen; see the cash guide for limits and fallback options.
Fares below are in RMB. Rail times describe the stated journey, excluding border checks, baggage, waiting and the last leg to your hotel. Check the operator link for your travel date and direction.
Metro Line 11
Follow signs from arrivals to Airport station and take Line 11 towards the city. For Futian, check the relevant eastbound service; other districts may require a change.

- Distance-based fare. Ordinary and business-class tickets are different; select the one you intend to use.
- Time
- Check the current departure and complete route to the hotel.
If an app payment setup is unfinished, ask at the station about a single-journey ticket. Do not assume any foreign bank card can be tapped directly at the gate.[1][3]
Line 11 and Line 5 to Shenzhen North
Take Line 11 to Qianhaiwan, then change to Line 5 for Shenzhen North railway station.

- Check the through metro fare for Shenzhen North before buying.
- Time
- Allow transfer, station walking and train boarding time on top of the metro ride.
Useful for an onward train or a hotel near the station. Verify that the rail ticket actually departs from Shenzhen North; Shenzhen has several railway stations.[2]
NA1 night bus towards Futian
The city airport guide lists NA1 with stops including Shenzhen Airlines Building and Investment Building. Confirm the current destination and your stop at the airport bus counter.

- Time
- The guide lists overnight airport departures, but check the current timetable after collecting your bags.
Confirm your stop and the final trip to the hotel before buying. The return-to-airport route can use different stops, so check that direction separately before departure.[1]
Official taxi queue
Follow taxi signs from the terminal to the designated queue and show the exact Chinese hotel address.

- Use the metered fare and confirm any additional charges. App quotes and taxi fares may differ.
- Time
- Check a live road estimate; the destination district has a large effect on the journey.
A taxi may simplify a late arrival or heavy luggage. App cars have separate pickup areas, so follow the booking instructions if you choose one.[1]

Where to stay in Shenzhen
These are suggested areas, not inspected hotels. Compare the actual station exit, walk to the property and front-desk hours before choosing a room.
Futian and Civic Center
福田 / 市民中心
A practical first base for the city-history museum and journeys to other districts. Choose a hotel with a straightforward station exit and entrance.
Wide roads and large blocks can make the final walk longer than it looks. Check a walking route, not just the distance on a booking map.
Nanshan and Shekou
南山 / 蛇口
Useful if your plans focus on western Shenzhen, waterfront walks and meals in the Shekou area.
Futian, Luohu and eastern heritage sights require extra travel. Compare a hotel near your main activities with one marketed broadly as being in Nanshan.
Luohu
罗湖
An option if your plans focus on the older eastern city or a specific onward journey from that area.
Airport travel and western waterfront visits can be longer. A nearby border crossing is useful only if your documents and onward plan support that crossing.
Confirm the first night in writing
Tell the exact branch that you will check in with a foreign passport and give your arrival time. Ask it to confirm registration, the deposit amount and accepted payment methods. Save the reply and booking reference offline.
“I will arrive at about [time] with a [country] passport. Can your front desk complete my check-in and passport registration then? What deposit and payment methods do you require?”
The old “foreign-guest licence” claim is not a reliable booking rule. Read the hotel check-in guide for the official position and a refusal fallback, and the accommodation registration guide if you are staying in a home or apartment.
03 / Move around
Getting around the city
Choose an ordinary or business-class metro ticket deliberately
Shenzhen Metro distinguishes ordinary single-journey tickets from business-class ones. Follow the carriage signs and use the ticket you bought. Ask staff before boarding if the distinction is unclear.[3]
Make the waterfront one outing
For a western walk, Qianhai Stone Park is an option near Qianwan station on Lines 5 and 9. Check the walking route and weather before going; choose a shorter walk or an indoor plan if conditions are poor.[7]
Treat Hakka heritage as a separate half-day or longer
Longgang Hakka Folk Customs Museum occupies the Hehu residence. The official visitor page lists Nanlian on Line 3 and Longyuan on Line 16 as approaches. Check the complete route from your hotel before adding it to the day.[5]
Save destinations in Chinese as well as English. The map app guide helps with place-name mismatches; the train guide covers passport names, tickets and station checks for onward travel.
04 / Sit down for a meal
What to eat, and how to order
Cantonese and Hakka dishes are a good place to start eating in Shenzhen. These regional traditions sit alongside food from across China. Try stuffed tofu or salt-baked chicken with rice and vegetables, and check the portion before ordering: a whole bird is a lot for one person.
Hakka stuffed tofu
客家酿豆腐 · kè jiā niàng dòu fu
Tofu filled and cooked with a savory stuffing, often served with sauce.
Ask about the filling and stock. A tofu dish can contain meat, so do not use the name as a vegetarian label.
Salt-baked chicken
盐焗鸡 · yán jú jī
A chicken dish associated with Hakka cooking, seasoned with salt.
Check whether the listed portion is a whole bird, half bird or smaller serving, especially when eating alone.
Pork with preserved mustard greens
梅菜扣肉 · méi cài kòu ròu
Rich slices of pork served with preserved greens, suitable for sharing with rice.
Ask about portion size and order a vegetable dish alongside it if you want a more varied meal.
Roast goose
烧鹅 · shāo é
Cantonese roast goose, commonly sold in portions or as part of a rice meal.
Confirm the portion and price before ordering. Expect bones, and ask whether a sauce is included or served separately.
When the QR menu does not work
Ask staff to take your order. Check the menu price and portion size before ordering; photographs may show a larger serving. For allergies or strict dietary requirements, show a translated card listing ingredients and cross-contact concerns. A dish name or “no chilli” request does not establish that a meal is safe for you.

Prepare a wallet and a backup before travel using the payment guide. For a failed payment, follow the troubleshooting steps; do not assume a foreign card works at every shop.

Reservations to check first
Shenzhen Museum: check the venue first
Choose the venue before checking admission: History and Folk Culture, Ancient Art, and the Reform and Opening-up Exhibition are separate visits. Open the museum’s current visitor guide for that venue’s calendar and reservation instructions. If passport entry or booking is unclear, contact the museum before setting off.[4]

The official visitor information says ordinary admission does not require a reservation. Check the current opening notice before travelling; the regular schedule closes on Mondays except public holidays. Group guided visits have separate arrangements.[5]

A first Shenzhen itinerary
These are editorial suggestions. Move the days around your tickets, opening dates, weather and energy after the flight.

Futian and the city story
Start with Shenzhen Museum’s History and Folk Culture venue after checking its calendar. Read the exhibits, then eat nearby. Keep the afternoon flexible, with a walk around your base or another indoor stop.

A western neighborhood and the water
Choose Nanshan, Shekou or Qianhai for the day. Have lunch there, then take a waterfront walk if the weather allows. Check the route back to your hotel before staying out for dinner.

Hakka heritage, if it interests you
Visit Longgang Hakka Folk Customs Museum and try one of the dishes above. Check opening arrangements first. If the long journey does not suit you, choose another museum venue or return to a neighborhood you enjoyed.

With more time
For a separate coastal day, the supplied photo shows the Langqi Zhanyun seafront walkway (Langqi breakwater) in Dapeng New District. This is a different outing from the Shekou waterfront above: check current access, weather and return transport before planning around it. Alternatively, use the extra day for electronics shopping or another museum. A Hong Kong visit needs separate entry and mainland re-entry checks.
Questions before you go
Is Shenzhen a reasonable first stop in mainland China?
Yes, if the flights and onward journey suit you. Keep the first day simple and choose the hotel district carefully. A short visit is easier when you focus on two areas rather than a long list of scattered sights.
Do I need to book Shenzhen Museum?
Check the current visitor guide for the exact venue and exhibition. Do not assume that an older no-reservation notice applies to every building or special exhibition. If the passport instructions are unclear, contact the museum before travelling there.
Is the airport near Shenzhen North station?
They are separate transport hubs. The official route is Line 11 to Qianhaiwan, then Line 5 to Shenzhen North. Leave time for the interchange and the railway boarding process.
Can I add Hong Kong without planning ahead?
Check the relevant entry permissions, crossing and return journey first. A metro route to a border area is not proof that you can enter Hong Kong or return to mainland China on your current documents.
