Chengdu travel guide
Book the panda visit, find a hotel near the metro, and leave some of the day free for lunch or tea. Three days gives you room for both the city and Panda Base. Before planning the first evening, check your flight: Tianfu (TFU) and Shuangliu (CTU) are different airports, with different routes into Chengdu.
Suggested stay Allow three full days for the city and Panda Base. Give any distant excursion a separate day.
Before you arrive
- Check whether your ticket says TFU, Chengdu Tianfu, or CTU, Chengdu Shuangliu. Save the hotel address in Chinese before flying.
- Book the correct Panda Base location and admission session using the passport details of every visitor. Keep the confirmation available offline.
- Ask about the actual dish and sauce; a sweet name does not promise mild food.
Check your passport and itinerary in the entry checker before booking. Its coverage and unresolved rules matter: an airport route in this guide does not establish permission to enter China.
01 / Land and get settled
From the airport to your hotel
Tianfu and Shuangliu both have rail connections, but neither airport metro line goes straight to every central neighborhood. Plan to your hotel station, including transfers and the final walk. Immigration, baggage collection and queues are separate from train journey time; do not attach a fixed clearance estimate to your landing time.
Before leaving the terminal
Use the arrival guide to separate immigration, baggage collection and customs. Follow the current official instructions for your documents and anything you need to declare.
Open your saved hotel address and check that your connection works. If you need a SIM, ask the airport information desk for an operator counter and confirm its hours and total price before paying. A travel data eSIM does not automatically give you a Chinese phone number. For cash, look for an ATM displaying your card network and review its fee screen; see the cash guide for limits and fallback options.
Fares below are in RMB. Rail times describe the stated journey, excluding border checks, baggage, waiting and the last leg to your hotel. Check the operator link for your travel date and direction.
Tianfu: Line 18 and a city connection
From Tianfu Airport Terminal 1 & 2 station, take Line 18 toward South Railway Station. For Tianfu Square, change to Line 1; for another neighborhood, check the current route planner.

- The airport lists CNY 10 between the airport terminals and South Railway Station; onward destinations can cost more.
- Time
- Check the next departure and complete route, including the transfer.
Follow metro signs through the Ground Transportation Center. Keep the Chinese hotel address ready if you need help choosing a ticket.[1]
Shuangliu: Line 10 and Line 3
Take Line 10 from your terminal and change at Taipingyuan to Line 3 for Chunxi Road. Line 10 itself does not serve Chunxi Road.

- Distance-based metro fare; confirm your destination at the ticket machine or service counter.
- Time
- Use the current timetable for the final connecting train as well as the airport departure.
The airport lists stations for both terminals. Choose the entrance for your arrival terminal and follow the platform direction signs.[2]
Shuangliu: Night Bus 1
The airport lists Night Bus 1 to Chunxi Road, with central stops including Jinjiang Hotel and Yanshikou.

- CNY 2 in the airport listing; confirm the posted fare.
- Time
- Listed airport departures run 21:00 to 04:30, with potentially long waits. Recheck before relying on it.
Ask which stop is nearest the hotel, then plan the remaining walk or taxi ride. Keep a taxi fallback if the next bus is inconvenient.[3]
Tianfu: official taxi rank
Follow the terminal signs to the official taxi queue and show the driver your hotel name and full Chinese address.

- Metered for destinations within Chengdu, according to the airport; the final total depends on the journey.
- Time
- Traffic and the queue affect the trip. Check a live estimate after collecting your bags.
This can be easier with heavy bags or after rail service ends. Ride-hailing pickups use a separate signed area, so do not wait at the taxi rank for an app booking.[1]
Save your hotel's Chinese address before flying. If the pickup map will not load, ask airport staff for the signed taxi queue. See the Didi guide for account setup and pickup problems.
02 / Choose a base
Where to stay in Chengdu
These are suggested areas, not inspected hotels. Compare the actual station exit, walk to the property and front-desk hours before choosing a room.
Chunxi Road and Taikoo Li
春熙路 / 太古里
A convenient first base for shopping, meals and an evening walk after a day out. Look at the actual walking route from the metro exit to your hotel.
Busy streets and nightlife can mean noise. Ask for a room away from the road if that matters to you.
Tianfu Square
天府广场
A central base for Chengdu Museum and metro journeys. It suits visitors who want to return to the same hotel between sightseeing and dinner.
Large roads and station passages can make a short map distance feel longer with bags.
Wenshu Monastery area
文殊院
A choice for visitors who prefer neighborhood walks and small meals to staying beside the main shopping district.
A quiet-looking lane does not establish a quiet room. Check recent property details, lift access and the walk from the station.
Confirm the first night in writing
Tell the exact branch that you will check in with a foreign passport and give your arrival time. Ask it to confirm registration, the deposit amount and accepted payment methods. Save the reply and booking reference offline.
“I will arrive at about [time] with a [country] passport. Can your front desk complete my check-in and passport registration then? What deposit and payment methods do you require?”
The old “foreign-guest licence” claim is not a reliable booking rule. Read the hotel check-in guide for the official position and a refusal fallback, and the accommodation registration guide if you are staying in a home or apartment.
03 / Move around
Getting around the city
Check the whole metro journey
Check the current route in the Chengdu Metro planner, including the direction, interchange and last connecting train. Save the hotel station and exit in Chinese. For the return flight, look up the route again rather than relying on the airport instructions you saved on arrival.[1]
Keep the two airport names visible
Save both the code and terminal for your departing flight. A driver shown only “Chengdu airport” cannot resolve which booking you hold. If you are changing airports, treat that as a separate transfer with its own margin.[2][1]
Group nearby stops
Spend a morning around Tianfu Square and the museum, or an evening around Chunxi Road. Avoid crossing the city for every meal. At the museum, Tianfu Square station is served by Lines 1 and 2.[5]
Save destinations in Chinese as well as English. The map app guide helps with place-name mismatches; the train guide covers passport names, tickets and station checks for onward travel.
04 / Sit down for a meal
What to eat, and how to order
Start with individual dishes rather than assuming every Sichuan meal has the same heat level. The four foods below have documented Chengdu traditions, but recipes and portions vary between restaurants. Ask before ordering if you avoid meat or have an allergy. A request for less chili does not remove every ingredient in a prepared sauce.
Zhong dumplings
钟水饺 · zhōng shuǐ jiǎo
Small pork-filled dumplings, often served with a sweet, savory red chili oil sauce.
The red-oil version is spicy despite its sweetness. Ask whether a clear-broth version is available.
Mapo tofu
麻婆豆腐 · má pó dòu fu
Soft tofu with chili, Sichuan pepper and a rich sauce; the documented Chen Mapo recipe includes minced beef and meat stock.
Do not assume tofu means vegetarian. Order rice alongside it and confirm the ingredients if you need a meat-free meal.
Long wontons
龙抄手 · lóng chāo shǒu
Thin wrappers around a pork filling, served in clear broth or with red-oil seasoning.
Specify the broth you want. Clear soup still contains animal ingredients; it is not a vegetarian alternative.
Lai sweet rice balls
赖汤圆 · lài tāng yuán
Soft glutinous-rice balls with sweet fillings, including sesame varieties.
Ask which filling is being served. Traditional recipes can include lard, and sesame is a common ingredient.
When the QR menu does not work
Ask staff to take your order. Check the menu price and portion size before ordering; photographs may show a larger serving. For allergies or strict dietary requirements, show a translated card listing ingredients and cross-contact concerns. A dish name or “no chilli” request does not establish that a meal is safe for you.

Prepare a wallet and a backup before travel using the payment guide. For a failed payment, follow the troubleshooting steps; do not assume a foreign card works at every shop.
05 / Book the day that matters
Reservations to check first
Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding
Most visitors need a real-name online reservation for a morning or afternoon session. The official page lists advance sales up to 14 days ahead and authorized channels including Trip.com. Bring the original passport matching the booking. Check the location carefully: Panda Valley in Dujiangyan is a separate visit.[4]

Check the museum visitor page for the current exhibitions, admission process and official reservation link. The regular schedule closes on Mondays except public holidays. The museum sits beside Tianfu Square, so it fits a central-city day when the opening calendar works.[5]

A first Chengdu itinerary
These are editorial suggestions. Move the days around your tickets, opening dates, weather and energy after the flight.
- Day 1
Get settled, then stay central
After checking in, take a short walk near the hotel and try one small dish. If you arrive early enough and have confirmed museum admission, visit Chengdu Museum at Tianfu Square. Leave Chunxi Road for an easy evening; you can stop whenever jet lag catches up.

Make time for the pandas
A panda visit has its quiet moments: resting on the platform, then a face among the leaves. Supplied by the Chinista editor; capture date not recorded. Plan around your booked Panda Base session and check the entrance before leaving the hotel. There is plenty of walking inside, so keep the rest of the day light. Pandas may be resting or out of view when you arrive; leave time to look around without rushing to another attraction.
- Day 3
A neighborhood and an unhurried meal
Walk through the Wenshu Monastery neighborhood or a central park, then stop for tea. Check opening arrangements if you want to enter the monastery. For dinner, pick a few dishes to share and ask about the sauces before ordering.

With more time
Choose one excursion such as Dujiangyan or Leshan and research admission and return transport separately. Neither belongs in the spare hour before a flight. Otherwise, spend the extra day in another neighborhood.
Questions before you go
Which airport should I choose?
Compare the complete flight and hotel journey. CTU and TFU have different routes; a cheaper fare can lose its advantage if the arrival requires an expensive or tiring transfer.
Can I reach Chunxi Road directly on Line 10?
No. From Shuangliu, one workable route is Line 10 to Taipingyuan, then Line 3 to Chunxi Road. Check the current train directions and service times.
Is a “mild” Sichuan dish safe for someone who avoids chili?
Mild is a relative description. Show “不要辣椒” for no chili and ask about the sauce before ordering. Zhong dumplings in red oil and sweet-water noodles can still contain chili.
Do I need a guide for the Panda Base?
An ordinary visit does not require buying a guided package. Start with the official ticket rules and a transport plan. A guide is an optional service, not a substitute for a valid reservation.
