Guangzhou travel guide
Start Guangzhou with a slow dim sum breakfast. Spend one day among the older streets of Liwan or Yuexiu, then another around Guangdong Museum and the Pearl River. These are separate outings, so choose your hotel around the part of the city you want to return to each evening. On arrival, check your Baiyun Airport terminal: T3 has different transport connections from T1 and T2.
Suggested stay Allow two or three full days: one for older neighborhoods, another for the museum and river, with extra time for meals.
Before you arrive
- Read the terminal on your airline confirmation, then recheck close to departure. Terminal 3 is operating, and airline assignments have changed.
- Book a hotel near a useful metro station and save the exact entrance. “Central Guangzhou” covers several areas with different advantages.
- Reserve Guangdong Museum through its official channel, with an outdoor alternative if your time slot is unavailable.
Check your passport and itinerary in the entry checker before booking. Its coverage and unresolved rules matter: an airport route in this guide does not establish permission to enter China.
01 / Land and get settled
From the airport to your hotel
Guangzhou Baiyun Airport is CAN. Terminal 3 opened in October 2025, and international and regional services formerly using Terminal 1 moved to Terminal 3 in January 2026. This does not mean every international flight uses T3. Check your own flight. Airport South and Airport North metro stations serve T1 and T2; T3 has its own ground transport arrangements.
Before leaving the terminal
Use the arrival guide to separate immigration, baggage collection and customs. Follow the current official instructions for your documents and anything you need to declare.
Open your saved hotel address and check that your connection works. If you need a SIM, ask the airport information desk for an operator counter and confirm its hours and total price before paying. A travel data eSIM does not automatically give you a Chinese phone number. For cash, look for an ATM displaying your card network and review its fee screen; see the cash guide for limits and fallback options.
Fares below are in RMB. Rail times describe the stated journey, excluding border checks, baggage, waiting and the last leg to your hotel. Check the operator link for your travel date and direction.
T1 or T2: Metro Line 3
Use Airport South for T1 or Airport North for T2, then follow the current Line 3 route and any interchange needed for your hotel.

- Distance-based fare; check the machine or service counter for your destination.
- Time
- Check the last complete connection, not only the last airport departure.
Do not follow these instructions out of T3 without first arranging a terminal transfer. Save your destination station in Chinese.[2]
T3: Gaozeng shuttle plus metro
The airport transport guidance lists a shuttle from T3 to Gaozeng metro station, where you can continue into the metro network.

- The shuttle is listed at CNY 2; buy the metro journey separately.
- Time
- This is a scheduled service, not an all-night connection. Confirm operating hours at the stop.
Ask for 高增地铁站. If it has finished, use the terminal transfer service or an official taxi instead.[2]
T3: intercity rail
Baiyun Airport East station is in the T3 Ground Transportation Center. Check the current departure board and the transfers needed for your destination before choosing a train.

- Depends on the booked rail journey; check the fare before purchasing.
- Time
- Stopping patterns and departures matter more than the line drawn on a map.
Ask staff to check the exact destination. Intercity rail and the metro are different services, with different ticket arrangements.[2]
Any terminal: official taxi
Follow the signed taxi queue for your terminal and show the full Chinese hotel address. At T3, taxi and app-car pickup locations are separate.

- Confirm the metered fare basis and any additional charges; do not treat a general online estimate as a quote.
- Time
- Traffic, queues and your hotel location determine the total journey.
For a late arrival or several heavy bags, compare this with the transfers and walk required by rail. Keep your booking confirmation accessible.[2]

02 / Choose a base
Where to stay in Guangzhou
These are suggested areas, not inspected hotels. Compare the actual station exit, walk to the property and front-desk hours before choosing a room.
Yuexiu and Beijing Road
越秀 / 北京路
A practical base for visitors who want older central streets, meals and evening walks near their hotel. Compare the actual hotel location with the nearest station.
Shopping streets can be crowded and noisy. Check whether the room faces a busy road and whether a taxi can reach the entrance.
Liwan and Changshou Road
荔湾 / 长寿路
Good for a trip built around Xiguan food, teahouses and walking through older neighborhoods. Longjin Road and its surrounding streets offer several possible meal stops.
Buildings and pavements vary. Check lift access, luggage handling and the route from the metro before choosing a small property.
Tianhe and Zhujiang New Town
天河 / 珠江新城
A useful choice for modern hotels, shopping and a day around Guangdong Museum and the river.
Allow travel time for older Liwan neighborhoods. A room with a skyline view may still be a long walk from the station entrance.
Confirm the first night in writing
Tell the exact branch that you will check in with a foreign passport and give your arrival time. Ask it to confirm registration, the deposit amount and accepted payment methods. Save the reply and booking reference offline.
“I will arrive at about [time] with a [country] passport. Can your front desk complete my check-in and passport registration then? What deposit and payment methods do you require?”
The old “foreign-guest licence” claim is not a reliable booking rule. Read the hotel check-in guide for the official position and a refusal fallback, and the accommodation registration guide if you are staying in a home or apartment.

Getting around the city
Keep airport rail names straight
Airport South, Airport North and Baiyun Airport East are different stations. Match the station to your terminal and service before buying a ticket, especially on the return journey.[2]
Explore a food neighborhood on foot
Longjin Road and Changshou Road make a manageable focus for a Liwan outing. The city food guide points to Chen Clan Academy and Changshoulu metro stations; choose an exit after checking your first stop.[6]
Use a second food walk if you have time
The Dezheng Middle Road and Wenming Road area, near Peasant Movement Institute station, makes another food walk. Choose a noodle shop or dessert stop to start, then see how much room you have left.[6]
Save destinations in Chinese as well as English. The map app guide helps with place-name mismatches; the train guide covers passport names, tickets and station checks for onward travel.
04 / Sit down for a meal
What to eat, and how to order
For a first dim sum meal, order a few dishes and add more if you are hungry. Check whether the menu price is per piece or per basket and whether tea is charged separately. Cantonese cooking offers plenty beyond dim sum: noodles or a plate of stir-fried rice noodles can make a simpler meal when you are tired.
Shrimp dumplings
虾饺 · xiā jiǎo
Steamed dumplings with a delicate wrapper and shrimp filling, commonly ordered with morning tea.
Contains shellfish. Ask about other ingredients if needed; the dish name is not a complete allergen list.
Barbecued pork buns
叉烧包 · chā shāo bāo
Buns filled with sweet-savory barbecued pork, often served as part of dim sum.
Confirm whether the portion is steamed or baked and how many buns the order contains.
Wonton noodles
云吞面 · yún tūn miàn
A bowl combining noodles, filled wontons and broth. The city food guide describes a broth made with bones and fish.
Ask about the filling and stock if you avoid pork or seafood. A clear broth does not mean vegetarian.
Beef chow fun
干炒牛河 · gān chǎo niú hé
Wide rice noodles stir-fried with beef, bean sprouts and onion.
A useful shared dish or a meal on its own. Confirm the portion size and any sauce ingredients you need to avoid.
When the QR menu does not work
Ask staff to take your order. Check the menu price and portion size before ordering; photographs may show a larger serving. For allergies or strict dietary requirements, show a translated card listing ingredients and cross-contact concerns. A dish name or “no chilli” request does not establish that a meal is safe for you.

Prepare a wallet and a backup before travel using the payment guide. For a failed payment, follow the troubleshooting steps; do not assume a foreign card works at every shop.

Reservations to check first
Guangdong Museum
The museum lists free admission with real-name, timed reservations. Start from the official website and its booking channel, and check the current exhibitions and closure notices. If the passport booking will not go through, contact the museum before travelling there.[3]

Choose the exact observation or attraction package in the official ticket portal. Check the date, entry conditions and what the package includes before paying. An outside view from the river area is a different outing and does not require buying a tower admission package.[4]

A first Guangzhou itinerary
These are editorial suggestions. Move the days around your tickets, opening dates, weather and energy after the flight.
- Day 1
Liwan at the pace of lunch
Start with a seated dim sum meal, then walk a section of Longjin Road or the streets around Changshou Road. Leave room for a snack instead of ordering everything at breakfast. If you want to enter Chen Clan Academy, check its current admission arrangements separately; the food walk does not depend on getting inside.

Museum and the river
Use your confirmed Guangdong Museum session as the anchor for the day. Afterwards, eat nearby and walk towards the Pearl River when the weather is comfortable. Add Canton Tower only if you want the specific paid experience and have checked its booking terms. You do not need to do both a tower visit and a cruise.

Another neighborhood, or a slower return
Try the Wenming Road area for noodles and dessert, or return to Liwan. If departing today, keep lunch near a useful route to your hotel, collect your bags and check the airport terminal again.

With more time
An extra day gives you more time for food, museums or shopping. Treat another Greater Bay Area city as a separate rail plan. Hong Kong or Macao also needs its own entry and re-entry check.
Questions before you go
Does Baiyun Airport still have only two terminals?
No. Terminal 3 opened in October 2025. Airline assignments changed again in January 2026, so use your current flight information rather than an older airport guide.
Should I stay in Liwan or Tianhe?
Choose Liwan if older neighborhoods and food walks are your priority. Choose Tianhe or Zhujiang New Town if you prefer a modern hotel base near the museum and river. Check the individual property and metro walk either way.
Do I need to reserve every meal?
There is no citywide rule. Check the chosen restaurant for busy meal times or a larger group. Keep a nearby alternative so one long queue does not dictate your day.
Is Canton Tower essential for a first visit?
Only if the paid experience interests you. A museum day, a river walk and time in older neighborhoods already make a full visit. Check the package contents before deciding.
