Do Singaporeans Need a Visa for China? 2026 Guide

Singapore ordinary passport holders can visit mainland China visa-free for up to 30 days. Check the passport, purpose, documents and longer-stay fallback.

The short answer

A Singapore citizen using a valid ordinary passport can currently enter mainland China without a visa for a stay of no more than 30 days under the bilateral agreement effective since 9 February 2024. That short answer is useful only if the passport, visit and length of stay fit: work, news reporting, a stay over 30 days or another activity requiring advance approval needs the appropriate visa before travel.

Step by step

What to do

  1. 01

Use the ordinary passport covered by the agreement

The visa exemption follows the Singapore ordinary passport presented at entry. Residence in Singapore, a work pass or a different travel document does not substitute for the covered passport. Keep the same passport details on flight, accommodation and identity-based transport bookings.

  2. 02

Keep the visit inside 30 days

The agreement allows a stay of no more than 30 days per entry. Count conservatively from the entry record, leave disruption margin and do not translate 30 days into an informal calendar month.

  3. 03

Make the purpose easy to explain

A normal short visitor trip should be supported by a coherent itinerary. Save the first accommodation, return or onward booking and contact details offline so the carrier and border officer can understand the real visit.

  4. 04

Use a visa for longer or approval-based activity

A stay over 30 days and activities that require prior approval, including work and news reporting, are outside the short-stay agreement. Obtain the visa or authorization matching the actual purpose before departure.

  5. 05

Recheck the agreement close to travel

Bilateral arrangements can be amended or suspended. Open the current official agreement record again before a non-refundable booking, especially when the itinerary or document is unusual.

The short answer for a Singapore ordinary passport

Singapore and China have had a mutual ordinary-passport visa exemption agreement in force since 9 February 2024. The official announcement says holders of ordinary passports may enter the other country without a visa and stay for no more than 30 days. For a Singapore citizen taking an ordinary holiday to mainland China for two weeks, that is normally the relevant starting point: no advance tourist visa is needed when every condition fits.

The word ordinary matters. This page does not automatically cover a temporary, emergency, diplomatic, service or other travel document. The rule also follows citizenship and the passport presented, not Singapore residence. A foreign citizen living in Singapore must check the rule for the passport they will actually carry. Keep that same document attached to airline, hotel and identity-based rail bookings to avoid a separate mismatch problem.

This guide is about mainland China. Hong Kong and Macao run separate immigration systems. If the trip crosses between Singapore, Hong Kong, mainland China and Macao, write those places in order and evaluate each border crossing. A visa-free arrival in Hong Kong does not itself authorize the next entry into the mainland, even when all the transport appears on one booking.

Prepare a small, coherent arrival file

Visa-free does not mean document-free. Carry the valid Singapore ordinary passport and save a compact arrival file: return or onward flight, first accommodation name and Chinese address, a simple itinerary and a reachable contact. The bilateral announcement establishes the exemption, while the carrier and border inspection still check the traveler and the stated trip. A coherent file is useful when a translated hotel name or an unusual route creates a question.

Check the passport name and number across reservations. Chinese rail tickets and some attraction bookings are identity-linked, so a wrong digit can become a problem after entry even when the immigration rule is clear. Save the first hotel's Chinese characters and phone number outside email. If the first night is in a private home, agree with the host in advance how the local accommodation registration will be completed.

Treat 30 days as a hard planning limit

The bilateral announcement gives a maximum of 30 days. Do not rewrite that as one month, because months vary in length and booking products may display dates differently. Read the permitted stay recorded at entry and plan departure with margin. A late-night flight, weather cancellation or missed domestic connection is easier to manage when the itinerary does not depend on the last possible hour.

A new border crossing creates a new entry decision. That does not mean a traveler should build repeated exits as a substitute for the immigration status needed for residence, work or long study. Each entry must still be genuine and lawful. When repeated visits begin to resemble living or working in China, seek advice on the appropriate visa or residence route rather than assuming that several short stays are automatically safe.

If an unexpected event makes departure difficult, contact the local exit-entry administration before the permitted stay ends. Do not wait until the airport or assume a hotel can extend immigration permission. The safer plan for a known stay beyond 30 days is to obtain the correct visa before leaving Singapore.

Separate a short visit from work and other approved activities

The MFA announcement expressly says that work, news reporting and other activities requiring prior approval need the relevant visa before entry. The legal character of an activity does not change because it lasts only a few days or because no salary is paid in China. A traveler joining a conference, visiting family or attending ordinary business meetings should still be able to explain the real purpose and check whether any separate sector approval applies.

A stay over 30 days also sits outside the agreement. Choose the visa category from the actual activity: tourism, study, employment, family residence or another purpose. The visa requirements guide explains the application path, but the responsible Chinese mission or visa centre supplies the current document list and accepts the application. Avoid third-party checklists that do not identify the mission, nationality and date they apply to.

The visa exemption is an entry route, not a promise of admission. Border inspection can refuse entry under the law even when the nationality and stay appear to match. Answer questions accurately and do not reshape a work trip as tourism or a round trip as transit merely to fit an easier label.

Use 240-hour transit only for a genuine transit itinerary

Singapore is also on the current nationality list for 240-hour visa-free transit. That policy requires travel from one country or region through eligible mainland ports to a different country or region, a confirmed onward ticket inside the time limit, sufficient document validity and movement within the official permitted-area network. Those conditions are more restrictive than the bilateral ordinary-passport exemption for a normal short visit.

While the 30-day mutual exemption fits, a Singapore tourist usually gains nothing by relying on transit. The transit rule becomes relevant only when the actual journey needs it—for example, if a future policy change affects the ordinary exemption or a different document is used. Never take the 30-day stay from one rule and the port or route logic from another to invent a hybrid result.

A route such as Singapore to Shanghai to Japan is a third-country sequence, but it can still use the simpler ordinary exemption when that rule fits. Singapore to Shanghai and back to Singapore is not third-country transit. Use the Chinista checker with the exact passport, entry date, purpose and route, then save the matching official source rather than relying on the label printed by a booking site.

Run a five-minute final check before departure

First, open the current MFA agreement record and confirm that the mutual exemption remains active. Second, verify that the physical passport is the ordinary passport used on every booking. Third, count the intended mainland stay and add a disruption buffer. Fourth, save accommodation, onward travel and the Chinese address offline. Fifth, confirm any separate rule for Hong Kong, Macao or another country on the itinerary.

If the answer changes because the passport, activity or stay changes, stop and use the visa route that matches the new facts. A source-checked guide reduces search time, but it cannot freeze policy or replace a carrier and border decision. Rechecking the source close to departure is part of the travel task, not a disclaimer hidden at the bottom of the page.

After arrival, keep the entry record and note the permitted stay. Confirm that the hotel has registered the stay, or complete the local process with a private host. Then the immigration task is finished unless the itinerary changes, the passport is lost or an emergency affects departure.

When Plan A fails

Fallbacks and safety checks

  • If the traveler will use a temporary, emergency, diplomatic or service document, ask the responsible Chinese mission about that exact document instead of assuming the ordinary-passport rule applies.
  • If the planned stay may exceed 30 days, apply for the visa matching the real purpose before departure rather than planning an uncertain extension after arrival.
  • If the airline cannot confirm the exemption, show the current official agreement source and ask for document review; keep a flexible booking while the issue is resolved.
  • If accommodation is not a hotel, arrange the legally required local accommodation registration with the host after arrival; visa-free entry does not remove that separate duty.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do Singapore citizens need a visa for China in 2026?

A Singapore citizen holding a valid ordinary passport may currently enter mainland China without a visa and stay no more than 30 days under the bilateral agreement. A different passport, longer stay or activity requiring prior approval needs a separate check and may require a visa.

How long can a Singaporean stay in China without a visa?

The official agreement announcement states no more than 30 days per entry. Treat that as 30 days, not an informal month, and follow the permitted stay recorded at entry.

Can a Singaporean work in China during a visa-free visit?

No. The MFA announcement specifically says work, news reporting and other activities requiring prior approval need the appropriate visa before entry. A short duration does not turn employment into tourism.

What should a Singapore traveler carry for visa-free entry?

Carry the covered ordinary passport and keep evidence that explains the trip, such as accommodation, return or onward travel and contact details. These support a coherent visit; they do not guarantee admission, which remains a border decision.

Is 240-hour visa-free transit better for Singapore citizens?

Usually not for an ordinary short visit while the bilateral 30-day exemption fits. Transit has extra route, ticket, port and permitted-area conditions. Use it only when the real itinerary needs that separate rule, not as a more complicated substitute.

Does the China visa exemption include Hong Kong and Macao?

This guide answers mainland China entry. Hong Kong and Macao have separate immigration systems. List each crossing in order and check the rules for every jurisdiction on the real itinerary.
