When is Golden Week in China in 2026?

China's National Day holiday runs from Thursday, October 1 to Wednesday, October 7 in 2026. If your first China trip falls inside that week, give yourself more time in each place. A packed itinerary leaves very little room for a sold-out train or a queue that eats the afternoon.

We checked the State Council's 2026 holiday notice and the railway's September travel announcement. Mid-Autumn Festival has its own break this year, September 25 to 27. September 28 to 30 are ordinary weekdays between the two holidays. Some people can join the breaks with annual leave, which helps explain why the railway's holiday operation starts before October 1.

The national calendar also moves two working days onto weekends. That matters if you need an office appointment, though a national workday does not tell you the opening hours of a particular bank branch, museum or visa centre. Check the institution itself.

Booking trains when the holiday is only days away

• As of September 28: the standard sales window for all October 1–7 journeys is open. Check remaining seats now.
• Confirm issued tickets for both the outbound and return journeys. A booking request is not an issued ticket.

The standard rail ticket sales window is 15 days, including the day tickets go on sale. For October 1 travel, the standard release date was September 17; for October 7, it was September 23.

China Railway forecasts its holiday passenger peak on October 1 and warns that popular services can sell out quickly. If the direct train is full, check another departure time or a connection suggested by 12306. Use its official waitlist where available, but keep accommodation and onward travel flexible until you actually have a ticket.

Before you pay for a room you cannot cancel, open the rail order and read the departure date, station and current status. Getting to a place is only half of a day trip.

The station name deserves a second look. A station with South or North in its name can be a different journey from the one shown by a search for the city alone. Save the exact station in Chinese and compare the transfer from your hotel. A spare seat at a different station is useful only if you can reach it.

There is a separate advance-reservation pilot on the Beijing-Shanghai rail corridors. Its rules do not replace the standard sales window across China. For a near-term trip, use the dates and order results displayed in the official service rather than assuming every route has the same early-booking option.

Pick a hotel that makes the rest of the week easier

Compare the whole stay before choosing the cheapest nightly rate. Read the cancellation deadline and work out the transfer to the station you will actually use. A hotel that saves a little money but adds a long trip at both ends of every day may be a poor bargain for this particular week.

Before paying, ask the property to confirm check-in for every traveller's passport and your expected arrival time. Keep the reply with the booking. If your train arrives late, ask what happens if it is delayed further and how to contact the front desk. If you already have a confirmed room, check the consequences before replacing it. Look at the new room's cancellation terms and the old booking's refund deadline together. A cheaper search result can stop looking cheap when you are paying for two rooms.

For local days, put one activity you care about on the calendar and keep the rest within easy reach. Leave the afternoon adjustable. You may want another museum; you may just want lunch without watching the time.

Book the sight before building the day around it

• Forbidden City: booking opens seven days before the visit at 20:00 China time. No same-day ticket sales.
• Bring the original passport used for the reservation.

Attractions set their own reservation rules. The Palace Museum's current visitor notice allows foreign visitors to reserve using a passport. Use its official booking channel and check the session you want.

For an October 5 visit, that seven-day calculation lands on September 28 at 20:00 in China. Check the museum's official channel for the date and session you want. Its English Visit page links to online booking; a ticketing inquiry by email does not hold a place. If the date is full, move the museum visit instead of buying a promise of guaranteed entry.

Holiday opening hours can also change nearby plans. The National Museum of China has announced that it will close on September 30, 2026 and open throughout October 1 to 7. It still requires a real-name reservation. This is a useful example of why 'I'll go the day before the holiday' needs checking at the individual attraction.

Keep a second plan that does not depend on another hard-to-get reservation. A neighbourhood walk with somewhere to stop for food is often easier to rearrange than a second major museum. Check access notices for your route, especially around ceremonial areas, and follow local directions if streets or entrances change.

Give the Great Wall a day of its own

An autumn photograph can make a Great Wall day look wonderfully simple. The practical decision is which managed visitor section you can reach and return from, on the date you have. Choose that before booking transport. Check its operator's current opening notice, ticket rules and return arrangements.

Treat autumn colour as a possibility, not something included with an October ticket. Foliage changes with the weather and elevation. Check the forecast for your chosen section and pack for an exposed walk, even if the city feels warm when you leave.

If a Wall visit is the one thing you most want from the trip, give it a day of its own. Keep a weather alternative in Beijing and check cancellation terms before paying. Trying to fit a mountain excursion between a hotel checkout and an evening train makes each delay harder to absorb.

Before you leave the hotel

• Save the day’s addresses in Chinese, including your hotel.
• Open your tickets and check the dates while you have a reliable connection.
• Carry enough phone charge for the journey home and a backup way to pay.
• Before an intercity move, check live train status and tell your hotel when to expect you.
