Maps & navigation
Source checkedDoes Google Maps Work in China?
Find out whether Google Maps will load on your mainland China connection, check the routes it gives you and prepare another map and offline addresses.
The short answer
Do not make Google Maps your only live navigation tool in mainland China. On an ordinary mainland connection, access to Google services is not a safe assumption; on roaming or travel data it may differ. Even when the map loads, verify the current Chinese address, exact entrance and route, then keep Apple Maps or AMap Global and an offline address card ready.

What to do
- 01
Check your phone and connection
Check the options for your iPhone or Android phone and for the connection you plan to use: ordinary mainland service, home roaming or a worldwide travel eSIM. The provider's routing can affect whether Google Maps loads. You still need to check the route it gives you.
- 02
Test three real destinations
Search the first hotel, the correct airport or railway station, and one attraction entrance. Match the Chinese name, address, phone number and branch against the provider rather than trusting a familiar English label.
- 03
Install another map that works in China
On iPhone, test Apple Maps and AMap Global; on Android, test the official AMap Global listing. Confirm the route and language behavior on the actual device instead of relying on a generic app list.
- 04
Save addresses outside your map account
Save the accommodation name, complete Chinese address, phone, station or gate and a route screenshot in a plain local note. Open it in airplane mode before departure.
Check access, destination details, the pin and the route
Before relying on Google Maps in China, check that it loads on your travel connection, finds the current destination, marks the right branch or entrance and gives a suitable route for your mode of travel. A map that loads may still send you to the wrong place.
Google's coverage table for Maps Platform APIs and SDKs lists map tiles, geocoding, driving directions and walking directions for China, with approximate traffic coverage. This describes data available to developers. It does not establish that the consumer Google Maps app will load on every mainland network or have current listings for every place.
Internet Society Pulse records ongoing blocking of Google services in China. International roaming and some travel data plans may route traffic differently from an ordinary mainland connection, so access can vary with the connection. Check your plan and keep another map ready for arrival.
| Test | What to check | A passing result | Independent fallback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Access | Open the service on the intended network | Map and search results load without a different connection | A China-operating map plus saved addresses |
| Place data | Search a real hotel, station and attraction | Name, address and phone agree with the provider | Paste the complete Chinese address |
| Pin and entrance | Zoom to the arrival point | The pin identifies the correct branch, gate or terminal | Written entrance note and nearby landmark |
| Route | Request the mode you will use | The route includes the expected walking, transit or driving detail | Screenshot plus a staffed transport option |

Separate network access from navigation reliability
On an ordinary mainland connection, do not plan an arrival around access to Google services. A home-carrier roaming plan or worldwide travel eSIM may send data through a different route, but the carrier and plan control that behavior. Confirm it with the provider and then test after arrival; do not assume that every product marketed for China behaves the same way.
If Google Maps loads, you have answered only the access question. Check the actual destination against the booking or venue. A familiar English listing can be incomplete, out of date or attached to the wrong branch. Large railway stations, airports, malls, hospitals and attractions often have several usable entrances, and the center point of a building is not necessarily where a taxi can stop or a pedestrian can enter.
If Google Maps passes your itinerary checks, use it for planning or reference, while keeping a map designed to work in China and a written Chinese address. Restoring network access alone cannot update an old listing, fix a wrong branch or confirm a public-transport route.
Avoid fixed-error claims such as “every pin is offset by 500 metres.” China's licensed mapping services and coordinate systems are technically complex. For travel, check the exact destination against the provider's written address, nearby landmarks and the entrance you need.
Choose a primary map by phone, network and task
On an iPhone, start by testing Apple Maps: Apple lists turn-by-turn navigation and public transport as available in China mainland. On Android, try AMap Global; its Google Play listing describes local route planning. AMap's App Store listing separately lists English for Apple devices. Check the place names, account features and offline areas you need, since these may not work on every device.
Choose a map that finds your Chinese destination and gives the route you need. Save the Chinese address, phone number, landmark and route image separately from the map account. Two map apps on the same phone can help with search problems, but both become unavailable if the phone or battery fails; network failure can also affect both.
| Situation | Primary candidate | What must be tested | Fallback |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone before departure | Apple Maps, then AMap Global | Chinese hotel name, station entrance, transit route and any offline control | Provider address and route screenshot |
| Android before departure | AMap Global | Correct official listing, English mode, Chinese address search and route type | Saved Chinese address and staffed taxi route |
| International roaming or travel eSIM | Whichever map passes the four tests | Actual data routing, place record, pin and route after landing | China-operating map on the same phone |
| Mainland SIM or ordinary local Wi-Fi | Apple Maps or AMap Global by device | Live search and route on that connection | Written destination and downloaded screenshots |
| No usable mobile data | Previously saved material | Files open in airplane mode and brightness is readable | Paper address card and staffed help point |
What to check in Google Maps, Apple Maps, AMap and Baidu
If you already use Google Maps, it can help you save ideas and understand the city before departure. Google's platform coverage table describes developer APIs and SDKs, not feature availability in the consumer app. Check the app on your travel connection after landing. A successful search at home does not establish that live navigation will work on an ordinary mainland network.
Apple Maps is a convenient starting point on an iPhone. Apple lists mainland China support for several Maps functions, but offline maps are available only in selected countries or regions. Check for a download control for your intended area on your phone. If an English search fails, paste the Chinese name and address supplied by the hotel, station or venue.
Try AMap Global if you want a map focused on China with an English interface. Its App Store listing names English and describes hotel routes, taxi planning, public transport and bilingual help cards. The Google Play listing describes destination search and route planning, but an English store description does not establish full English support on Android. Language options, sign-in, availability and English place search may differ by operating system, account region and version. Install from the official store and test your itinerary.
Baidu Maps can help you look up places and routes in Chinese. This guide does not establish that it has a current full English interface or a registration process for foreign accounts. Use it as a backup only if you can verify the Chinese text and route.
| Map | Reason to test it | Do not assume | Best verification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Maps | Familiar planning, saved ideas and English reference | Mainland access or current local listings | Open it on the travel connection and check real destinations |
| Apple Maps | Integrated iPhone navigation and listed mainland features | Every place name or offline region is available | Test Chinese search, entrance and route on the iPhone |
| AMap Global | China-focused map, English support and local route planning | Every feature works without login or in every store region | Install the official listing and rehearse the route |
| Baidu Maps | Chinese place and route reference | A complete current English experience | Use a verified Chinese name and compare the address |
Test one hotel, one station and one entrance before departure
Start with the first accommodation because it is the destination you may need while tired, offline and unable to explain the area. Ask the property or booking platform for the hotel’s Chinese name, complete street address, district, phone number and preferred vehicle entrance. Search both the name and full address. The matching name alone is not enough when a chain has several branches.
Next test the first airport or railway station. Chinese cities can have several stations with similar English names, and one station can have multiple terminals, squares or exits. Match the Chinese station name on the ticket, then inspect where the airport bus, metro, taxi queue or ride-hailing pickup actually meets passengers. Save the terminal or exit suffix with the city name.
Also check a destination where you need a specific entrance, such as a museum gate, scenic-area visitor centre, hospital department or large mall. Compare the pin with the venue's official arrival instructions and save any gate or nearby road name in Chinese. Check the last 200 metres of the approach as well as the general location.
Repeat these searches in each map you intend to use. Note which finds the place directly and which needs the Chinese address, so you can retrieve the correct route quickly when a driver is waiting or a station entrance is about to close.
- Confirm the Chinese characters, district and phone number, not just the translated name.
- Check the exact branch, terminal, gate, station square or metro exit.
- Save the provider’s written address separately from the map account.
- Repeat the test after a major app update or itinerary change.
- Never expose a booking reference, passport number or private home address in a public screenshot.
When the pin looks plausible but the destination is wrong
Stop before starting another paid ride. Compare the map listing with the booking confirmation: Chinese name, street number, district and phone. Search the complete Chinese address in the second map rather than copying only the first app’s coordinates. Two apps can display the same imported error, so the provider’s text remains the stronger identity check.
For a hotel, call or message the property through the booking channel and ask for the driver entrance or nearest landmark. For a railway station, use the Chinese station name printed on the ticket and follow official signs or staffed information. For an attraction, return to the venue’s official arrival page. A social post or old review can describe an entrance that no longer serves visitors.
If a driver is already present, show the address card and phone number rather than handing over an unlocked phone. If the destination is still uncertain, ask hotel, airport or station staff to confirm it. Changing the pin repeatedly while the car is moving can create a more expensive and less safe problem than pausing at a staffed location.
Check Hong Kong and Macao separately
This guide’s network warning is about mainland China. Hong Kong and Macao have different networks, transport systems and mapping conditions. A service that behaves one way in Shanghai may behave differently after a border crossing, and a data plan labelled China may or may not include either region.
For each region, confirm your mobile-plan coverage, save the local route and identify the relevant transport app or official journey planner. Keep the property's Chinese or local-language address even when Google Maps works. Check access, destination details, the pin and the route again after a border crossing.

Fallbacks and safety checks
- If Google Maps does not load, switch to the China-operating map you tested instead of changing several network settings at the taxi rank.
- If a destination appears under several pins, compare the Chinese characters, district, phone and provider-confirmed entrance before starting a paid ride.
- If no map has usable data, show the offline Chinese address card at an airport, station, hotel or staffed taxi queue.
- Do not download an unofficial APK, share an unlocked phone with a stranger or treat a bypass tool as proof that the route data is current.
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Does Google Maps work in China?
Do not rely on Google Maps as your only live map in mainland China. Ordinary mainland connections should not be assumed to reach Google services; roaming and travel-data routing can differ. If it loads, separately verify the place record, exact entrance and route.
Can I use Google Maps in China with international roaming or an eSIM?
Possibly, depending on how the carrier or travel provider routes data. Confirm the provider terms and test after landing. A successful connection does not prove that a hotel branch, station entrance or transit route is current.
Does a VPN make Google Maps accurate in China?
A different connection may let Google Maps load, but it cannot update an old place listing or confirm an entrance. This guide does not provide bypass instructions. Check the destination against its current Chinese address and keep another map that works in China ready.
What is the best map app for China on iPhone?
Start by testing Apple Maps with your real Chinese destinations, then keep AMap Global as a second route. Apple currently lists several Maps features for China mainland, but exact place search and offline availability still need to be checked on the device.
What is the best map app for China on Android?
Start by testing the official AMap Global app. Its Google Play listing describes local route planning; the App Store separately lists English for Apple devices. Check English search and route controls on the Android phone you will carry, along with Chinese addresses and account requirements.
Can I download Google Maps for offline use in China?
Check the download control for the exact area before depending on it. Google says offline maps are unavailable in some countries or regions, and offline public-transport, walking and cycling directions are not provided. Keep written Chinese addresses and route screenshots as a separate fallback.
Does the same Google Maps advice apply to Hong Kong and Macao?
No. This guide covers mainland China. Treat Hong Kong and Macao as separate network and transport environments, confirm that the mobile plan covers each region and test the local route independently.
