Which application centre to use

This guide covers an ordinary-passport applicant applying in India for an L tourist visa through the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre. The centre accepts Indian citizens and other nationals staying in India with appropriate legal status. Diplomatic and official passport cases follow a different route. The consular district also matters: the current New Delhi service-area notice directs residents of Maharashtra and Karnataka to Mumbai, and residents of Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal to Kolkata.

Choose an L visa for tourism. Business, work, study, journalism, family reunion and medical treatment require the category appropriate to the activity. Your form, invitation, financial evidence and itinerary should all support that purpose.

Use the centre responsible for your lawful residence and read its current notices. Logistics, holidays, fees and submission details can differ between New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. This guide mainly follows the New Delhi process in 2026; confirm local requirements with your receiving centre.

Complete the online review before visiting the centre

New Delhi Step 1 requires online payment of the chosen normal or express service fee before completing the online application. Keep the payment confirmation email. Create or sign in to the Visa for China account, complete the form and upload the required documents together with the payment confirmation. Check the account and email for review messages. Correct or supplement only what the official review asks for, and keep the final form consistent with the passport and bookings.

Wait for Online Review Completed before taking your passport to the centre. Normally, print the Visa Application Certificate from the confirmation email. If that status is shown but no email arrives, New Delhi Step 1 permits submission with the barcoded application form, a screenshot of the approved website page and other required documents. Counter staff still decide whether to accept the package. It does not mean a visa has been approved or issued.

Print or save the Visa Application Certificate attached to the approval email and note the deadline. The New Delhi Step 2 notice says the applicant must submit to the centre within 15 days of receiving the confirmation letter. The notice does not specify a separate deadline calculation for the no-email case. Contact the centre promptly to confirm timing if the letter has not arrived; do not assume unlimited time.

Prepare your tourist visa documents

Use the current L-category material list shown after you choose the centre and category. At minimum, prepare the original passport, current compliant photograph if requested, application certificate, itinerary evidence and any originals requested during online review. The centre warns that a passport with less than six months of validity creates refusal or entry risk. The current FAQ specifies a recent color photo, 48 by 33 millimetres, taken within six months and showing the current appearance.

New Delhi's notice dated 9 April 2026 (current page dated 28 August) adds a financial requirement for tourist applicants: personal savings-bank statements for the latest three months showing a minimum consistent monthly balance of INR 1 lakh, or a similar personal deposit certificate made at least three months before the application. For a minor or another special case using a parent or guardian's account, it asks for the account statement and a signed authorization letter from the account holder.

Check whether your receiving centre applies the New Delhi notice when you submit. Provide complete, unaltered statements, including every page. The itinerary should fit your circumstances and actual plans; bookings made only for the form can contradict the trip you describe.

• Original ordinary passport and the copies required by the live checklist.
• Visa Application Certificate, or the barcoded form and approved-page screenshot under the official no-email alternative.
• Recent compliant photograph when requested.
• Tourism itinerary, flight and accommodation or invitation evidence required by the centre.
• New Delhi financial evidence under the notice dated 9 April 2026.
• Proof of lawful stay in India for a non-Indian applicant.
• Any additional original specifically requested during online review.

Submit the passport after online review

The New Delhi FAQ says applicants no longer need an appointment and may submit on a working day within the deadline. The Step 2 notice calls this No Appointment Required. You must still complete online review first and follow the deadline and service hours. Check current holidays and opening times before going.

Bring the Visa Application Certificate (or the official no-email alternative described above), original passport, a fresh photo if the upload was judged non-compliant, and any original kinship, property or barcoded invitation document requested. Other categories have interview and document requirements that do not apply to a routine L application. Staff can still request additional material in an individual case.

The Step 2 notice requires online payment of the service fee before submitting the application online, then payment of the visa fee at the centre by cash or demand draft. The current fee page also lists cash and demand draft. Keep both receipts and the original pick-up form. Do not pay an individual or a personal QR code, and do not buy optional VIP service on a claim that it improves approval chances.

Application status and processing times

Online Review Completed allows you to proceed to physical submission. A collection or dispatch update tells you where the passport is in the return process. Neither confirms that a visa was issued; inspect the returned passport for the decision.

The New Delhi service-options page updated 28 August 2026 says regular service is usually six working days and express service usually four working days, with Embassy approval required for express and some applications taking longer. The centre's Step 3 notice uses the same expected collection days. Count from physical submission, not from first creating the online form, and add holidays and document-review time.

Keep travel flexible and allow extra processing time. The centre FAQ recommends applying roughly one month before entry and no earlier than three months, since applying too early can leave insufficient visa validity. If you urgently need the passport back, you may have to withdraw the application; this does not speed up approval.

Collect and inspect the passport before travel

Collect during the current opening hours with the original pick-up form or use the return method the centre has formally accepted. Do not rely on a screenshot of an expected collection date. If another person will collect, confirm the authorization requirement directly; do not assume possession of the receipt is sufficient.

Check the returned visa immediately for your name, passport number, category, number of entries, Enter Before date and Duration of Each Stay. A single-entry L visa permits only one entry. Its validity window differs from the permitted stay after entry. Contact the centre before departure if anything appears wrong.

Carry the itinerary and accommodation evidence used for the application. Issuance does not guarantee border admission, and a changed trip must still fit the visa purpose. If the visa is not issued, use the formal explanation or contact route available from the centre. Do not pay an intermediary claiming it can reverse a consular decision.
